Please note that due to all the drainage work that is being done at the Shelter there is no Open Day this Sunday (7th January). We hope that things will be back to normal next month.

Due to relocation one of our members has a four seater glass topped dining table and chairs, a two tier glass topped occasional table, a 3 seater settee and armchair, a 3 CD autochanger/radio/2 cassette audio system and a combination DVD/VHS tape player for sale - 25% of the proceeds will go to P.A.D. funds. Please contact Hilary on 66 11 44 617 if you are interested.

Flood Appeal

As many of you will know we have had a LOT of rain this year (the 5 year drought has been declared over and the reservoirs for Málaga now hold enough water for 2 years).

What is very good news for some is not so good for others. Due to the amount of rain that has fallen, and the fact that a lot of it fell when earlier rain had already saturated the ground, the P.A.D. Shelter has been flooded not once, but three times! !

The flooding affected both the Kennels and the Cattery as you can see in the slideshow below. On all occasions when we were flooded the bomberos (firemen) were absolutely wonderful in pumping the water out, although at times it was coming in just as fast as it was pumped out.

To pump the shelter dry, and to clean it up so that it was back to its usual standard, so our dogs and cats are happy again has cost us around 6000€! We are appealing to you to help us raise this money. 6000€ leaves a massive hole in our resources, and unless the money is replaced we shall not be able to help as many animals as we usually do. This will result in more cats, dogs, kittens and puppies being left at the mercy of their local perreras.

Can you help us to avoid this by making a donation to PAD? Unfortunately at the moment we are having problems with our PayPal account, so we would ask that, if you want to help, you do a bank transfer direct to our bank account, the details of which are given below.

Bank : la Caixa
IBAN : ES96 2100 2646 8502 1011 1436
SWIFT CODE: CAIXESBBXXX

Not only do we need to raise the 6000€ that we have already had to pay out, but we would also like to improve the situation for the future. We want to improve the drainage around the Shelter, to buy a bigger pump with the same capacity as that of the one that the bomberos used.

Also because of the flooding the Kennels were without electricity for a week. We would like to change the electrical wiring in the Kennels and Cattery so that all the electrics will be above the water flood level. If you want to know more about the other work that we would like to do, then please call in at the Shelter where full details of the improvements are on display.

Again we are determined that our capacity to help animals in distress will not be affected by these improvements. We therefore need to meet the costs from extra donations.

Have you seen Nico? Missing in Torreblanca, in the Urb. Jardines de Torreblanca area. For further details see our Lost and Found page.

Can you help Canastero?

canastero

Canastero has been in the PAD shelters for two years now. He is a very handsome boy of 4 years extremely muscular and strong. He is great with people but not so good with other dogs especially other males. He wants to be in a one person, one dog relationship! Can YOU offer him a good home?

About PAD

PAD is a privately run charity in the Mijas/Fuengirola area that specialises in the rehabilitation and rehoming of abandoned dogs and cats. Since our shelter opened in December 1998 we have found new homes for 5000 dogs and cats.

All our animals are cared for by qualified veterinarians and are fully vaccinated and micro-chipped.

We help would be adopters to make a suitable choice when taking a dog or cat and advise on the best way to care for them. As a result of this we have become involved in an educational programme in schools, on radio and television. We fight continually to prevent cruelty to animals and their abandonment, and we use every effort we can to persuade our law makers to pass legislation to protect animals from cruelty and exploitation.

We also want to see an official campaign to promote the sterilisation or castration of dogs and cats as a sensible way of controlling the numbers of domestic animals.

In the early days we became involved with a German organisation called Tierhilfe who adopt cats and dogs from us in Spain and rehome them in Germany. Today we still work together, they rehome many of our cats especially ones that have been diagnosed with feline aids and leukemia, animals that with medication can lead a normal life for many years. They are also very generous and send us cat toys, scratching posts, travelling boxes and cages.

In 2005 Miia a Finnish lady who was here on holiday and with little else to do decided to come and walk some of our dogs, during this time she saw the plight of dogs in Spain and on her return home started talking on the Internet, she was answered by Helena.

The two of them came back to Spain which resulted in them taking two dogs back to Finland with them thus Espanjankoirat was formed meaning "Spanish dog rescue" they now rehome on average 15 dogs a month in Finland. They are a non profit making organisation and any spare funds they spend back here helping our animals. To them it is a way of life.

Have a good look around our website, if you feel you would like to adopt or foster an animal, help out at the kennels as a volunteer dog walker or one of the many other tasks that need doing contact us.

If you would like to make a donation or sponsor an animal, please do not hesitate to contact us.
